Cursive O

An oval is nearly all there is to o in cursive as one font draws it on this page. The small o is a closed oval and nothing more, and the capital O is a larger oval with a small loop curled inside the top. The capital Q of that font resembles the capital O, and two small letters, c and a, resemble the small o. Further down, the small o is drawn inside ten words, from occupy to taco.

The drawing above sets a large oval beside a much smaller one, and both rest on the baseline. The capital O fills the whole space up to the cap height. The small o gets only to the x-height, which is 0.51 of the way the capital rises. Across, the small o takes up 0.44 of the capital's width.

Cursive capital O, a loop inside

One large slanted oval makes up most of the capital O. Its bottom is on the baseline and its top is at the cap height. Low down on the left, between the baseline and the x-height, is where the oval's side swells out the most.

Inside the top of the oval the line curls into a smaller loop. This loop hangs from the oval's upper left and takes up its upper part. So the capital has two enclosed spaces: the small loop, and what remains of the oval below and beside it.

The bottom of the small loop runs off to the right and cuts through the oval's right side above the x-height. Outside the oval the line goes on a short way, rising a little, and stops in a blunt tip. No part of the capital O lies further right than that tip.

Small o, one closed oval

The small o is a single closed oval. No line leads into it, and none leads out. It sits on the baseline, and its top touches the x-height.

The oval leans to the right. Its furthest-left point is in its lower half, and its furthest-right point is in its upper half. The white space inside is a slanted oval as well, and the line that goes around it stays about equally thick the whole way.

A second loop on the capital only

The capital O and the small o are both closed slanted ovals. The capital alone has a second loop inside it and a line that sticks out on the right. With that inner loop the capital O encloses two spaces, where the small o encloses one.

Oval is one of the ten words

Four of the words begin with the small o: occupy, outback, oval and overripe.

The capital Q, and the small c and a

In this font the capital O and the capital Q follow the same large slanted oval, from the cap height down toward the baseline. The capital O closes its oval, and it has a small loop inside the top with a tail out to the right. The capital Q leaves its oval open at the lower left. Its loop is at the bottom, and its tail dips under the baseline.

Two small letters, c and a, are look-alikes of the small o. Each of those likenesses is told on the other letter's own page.
