Cool Symbols
The symbols on this site are on thirteen pages, 1,262 Unicode characters in all, and no character is on two of them. Under each link below are the first characters of that page, up to twelve, to copy from here; the page itself holds its whole list.
The pages run from 11 characters on the Christmas page to 263 on the math page.
One filter that all thirteen lists pass
Each list has a rule of its own, and its page states it. Before any rule, a character has to pass one filter, the same for all thirteen and read from the Unicode data (Unicode 16.0.0):
- it is assigned and has a name
- its general category is Math_Symbol, Currency_Symbol or Other_Symbol
- its script is Common
- it is not deprecated
- it has none of the properties Variation_Selector, Emoji_Modifier, Emoji_Component and Regional_Indicator
- it is a single code point, not a sequence of several
The filter is why a letter, a digit or a combining mark is on no list, whatever its name is. Two rules widen it, each in one place: the brackets page adds the general categories Open_Punctuation and Close_Punctuation, and the currency page takes a currency symbol of any script.
Emoji and Emoji_Presentation: the two labels after a name
In the pages' tables a name can be followed by a label. The label is the name of one or two Unicode properties that the character has. Emoji by itself stands on a character with the Emoji property and without Emoji_Presentation, which the category pages call text presentation by default. Emoji, Emoji_Presentation stands on a character with both, called emoji presentation by default. A row with no label has neither property.
Of the 1,262 characters, 100 have the Emoji property: 38 with the first label and 62 with the second. The zodiac list is the only one where each character has both properties, and four lists have no character with either: math, currency, brackets, and lines and borders.
