Cursive R

No loop closes anywhere on the two letters of this page. They are the capital R and the small r, which is r in cursive as one font draws it, and neither one encloses a space. Two more capitals of that font, P and B, look like its capital R. The small r also turns up inside ten words, such as rasping, sworn and spur.

The small r pokes up a little past the x-height, and the capital R goes on to the cap height. That puts the rise of the small letter at 0.57 of the capital's. Both stand on the baseline and go no lower, and in width the two are closer: the small r is 0.83 as wide as the capital.

Capital R, three parts

Three parts make up the capital R: a slanted line that stands on the baseline, a rounded part at the upper right, and a leg at the lower right.

At the upper left there is a blunt tip, which lies between the x-height and the cap height. From this tip a line climbs to the right and joins the top of the slanted line.

Near the top the rounded part splits from the slanted line. It rises to the cap height, and its outer side is the furthest-right point of the capital. It curves back in to a small knot at the x-height. The knot does not reach the slanted line, and with the knot standing clear the capital R encloses no space.

The leg slants down to the right from the knot and rounds on the baseline. Its tail turns up to a tip that stays low in the space under the x-height.

Small r, a knob and a shoulder

A long curved line climbs across the small r. It starts at the far left, where a blunt tip touches the baseline. At its upper end the line swells into a rounded knob. The knob is the top of the small r, and it pokes up a little above the x-height.

A flat shoulder runs to the right from the knob. It sags slightly beside the knob and is level with the x-height further right. At the right the shoulder turns a rounded corner and comes down as a slanted line. That line rounds along the baseline and flips up into a short tail, whose tip is the furthest right the small r goes.

Nothing on the small r is closed. The space under the shoulder, between the curved line and the slanted line, is open at the bottom.

Different tops, the same upturned tail

In shape the capital R and the small r hardly match. The capital has a tall slanted line with a rounded part and a leg, and the small letter has a rising curve, a knob and a shoulder. They do finish alike: at the lower right each has a slanted line that rounds on the baseline into an upturned tail.

Two words, sworn and coeditor, change the r

In two of the ten words, sworn and coeditor, the drawing of the small r differs from the r standing alone.
