Cursive F
Fantasy, thrift and turf are three of the ten words on this page that show the small f, all drawn by one font. Above them stand that font's capital F and small f in cursive, together and one at a time. Its capital T looks like the capital F, and its small l like the small f.
At the top the two are level: the capital F and the small f each end at the cap height, and the small letter's rise matches the capital's. Only the small f drops below the baseline. That makes it the taller letter from top to bottom, 1.49 times the capital. It is the narrower one, though, at 0.7 of the capital's width.
Capital F, a wavy top bar
The capital F has three parts: a wavy bar across the top, a slanted line hanging from it and a short straight bar across the middle.
The top bar has a blunt tip at each end. The tip at the upper left is below the cap height. The bar rises from it to touch the cap height, dips, and reaches its second tip at the upper right. The slanted line meets the bar from below, to the right of the bar's middle.
The middle bar is straight and level. It lies on the x-height and sticks out on both sides of the slanted line.
At the bottom the slanted line swings left along the baseline and up to a sharp point. This point is at the far left of the letter, between the baseline and the x-height. A short bar heads right from it and ends in a blunt tip, with white space between that bar and the slanted line.
Small f, two closed loops
A line of the small f sets out from the baseline at the left edge and slopes up to the right. Above the baseline it folds into a slim closed loop that reaches the cap height.
A long straight line forms one side of that loop. It crosses the line from the left edge between the baseline and the x-height, and it forms one side of a second loop as well. This second loop is closed, long and narrow. It hangs from the crossing down through the baseline to the descender line, so the small f has two enclosed spaces.
The right side of the lower loop climbs back to the straight line above the baseline. A short bar sticks out to the right there and ends in a blunt tip. The upper loop still reaches further right than that bar.
Where each f keeps its short bar
Both letters reach the cap height, but with different parts: the wavy bar on the capital F and the top of a loop on the small f. Each has a short bar partway up. On the capital it crosses the slanted line at the x-height. On the small letter it sits lower and sticks out on the right side only. And the capital stays on the baseline, while the small f goes below it to the descender line.
The f of pacifier, between i and i
Curfew, pacifier and thrift carry the small f inside. In pacifier it stands between i and i.

The capital F beside T, the small f beside l
Each of the two is shown here beside one letter of this font that looks like it.
The capital T, like the capital F, has a bar across the top at the cap height and a slanted line down from it that hooks to the left at the baseline. The capital F has a short bar across its middle, near the x-height, and its top bar is wavy. The capital T has no middle bar, and its top bar is straighter.
Above the baseline the small f and the small l match: an upward sweep from the left folds into a slim loop that touches the cap height. Below it they do not. The small f continues into a second loop and has a short bar pointing right, and the small l stops at the baseline with a small tail.
