Cursive X
Two lines make up x in cursive on this page, a straight one and a curved one laid across it. The capital X and the small x both come from one font, and both are built that way. Six words show the small x with letters around it, inside exalted, explode and peroxide and as the last letter of cortex, matchbox and relax.
Each letter stretches from the baseline up to the top end of its straight line. On the small x that end is at the x-height, and on the capital X it touches the cap height. In figures, the small x has 0.51 of the capital's rise. Neither letter has any part under the baseline, and side to side the small x is 0.62 of the capital.
Capital X, two lines crossing
The capital X is two lines laid across each other. One is straight and joins the lower left to the upper right. The other is curved and joins the upper left to the lower right.
Both ends of the straight line are blunt. The lower end is the capital's far left and rests on the baseline, and the upper end is its far right and touches the cap height.
The curved line is hooked at the upper left. The hook's blunt tip sits just under the cap height, and the bend beside the tip touches that line. The two lines cross at about the x-height, near the middle of the letter.
Below the crossing the curved line drops steeply to the baseline. There it bends into a tail that points up at the right, and the tail ends nearer the baseline than the x-height. The four arms stand apart from one another, so the capital X encloses no space.
Small x, a leaning straight line
The small x has a straight line and a curved line, and they cross in the middle of the space under the x-height.
The straight line leans far over. Its lower end, on the baseline, is the far left of the small x, and its upper end, at the x-height, is the far right.
The upper left end of the curved line is hooked. The hook has a blunt tip a little under the x-height and a bend that touches the x-height. No part of the small x is closed, and no line leads into the letter from the left.
At the lower right the curved line rounds on the baseline and comes up in a short tail. The tail's tip stays low, in the letter's lowest third.
A crossing at the x-height, and one halfway under it
The two letters are alike in shape. Each is one straight line crossed by a curved line, and each curved line has a hook at the upper left and a tail at the lower right. The crossing is at the middle of the letter both times. That puts it at about the x-height on the capital X and halfway under that line on the small x.
Six words, and none begins with x
The small x is drawn in six words and stands in front in none of them. Exalted and explode have the x after an e, and peroxide has it between o and i.
