Cursive Y

A closed loop hangs under the baseline on both letters of this page, and a cup sits above it. This is y in cursive, capital and small, drawn by one font. Three other letters of that font are look-alikes, U among the capitals and g and u among the small letters. Ten words are drawn with the small y in them, such as yoga, skyline and crispy.

Both letters go below the baseline and do not stop until the descender line. Over the baseline they are less alike. The long line of the capital Y tops out at the cap height, and the small y gets to the x-height, 0.51 of that distance. With the loops counted in, the two are nearer in size: the whole small y is 0.67 as tall as the whole capital. It is 0.71 as wide.

Capital Y, hook, cup, loop

The capital Y has a hook at the upper left, and the hook stops in a blunt tip above the x-height. No other part of the capital is as far left as that tip, not even the loop underneath.

Under the hook is a cup. The cup does not come down to the baseline: its rounded bottom stops just above it.

A long slanted line stands on the right. Its blunt top is at the cap height, and the capital Y has nothing further right. The right side of the cup meets the long line close to the x-height.

The long line goes on through the baseline and bends left into a closed loop, whose bottom lies on the descender line. The left side of the loop climbs back and crosses the long line just above the baseline. Past the crossing the line keeps rising to the right, and it ends in a blunt tip roughly a third of the way up to the x-height.

Small y, a cup over a loop

Two blunt tops stand at the x-height on the small y, with a cup between them. The bottom of the cup touches the baseline. Of everything on the small y, the right-hand top is furthest right.

Below the cup the right-hand line continues straight down past the baseline. Under that line it curls left into a closed loop, which reaches down and touches the descender line. Its left side crosses the right-hand line just under the baseline, and there the loop is shut. Beyond the crossing the line rises to the right and ends in a blunt tip, a short way above the baseline.

The furthest-left part of the small y is the loop's left side, down below the baseline, for the loop swings far out.

The same loop, with a hook on the capital Y only

Below the baseline the two letters match: each has the same kind of closed loop, and each loop crosses back to end at the right. They differ at the upper left. The capital Y has a hook there, and the small y a blunt top. That moves the furthest-left point as well, from the tip of the hook on the capital down to the side of the loop on the small y.

Skyline and stinky put the y after a k

Skyline has the small y between k and l, and stinky ends in y after a k.
